Soil amendments are added to soils to improve their physical, biological or chemical properties. Soil amendments add nutrients to the soil as well. Viragrow uses different soil amendments in soil mixes. You can purchase your own soil amendments and make your own custom soil mix. Or let Viragrow make it for you!
Dispersul (Water dispersable sulfur)
Pure sulfur in a form that dissolves easily in water. No more granular sulfur that is visible after three years. The price is nearly the same but the time needed to acidify the soil is immediate.

GardenMAX 1 cubic foot/37 lb bag
Premium Soil Amendment
This is a ‘Fix It’ solution if your garden is not producing like it should. GardenMAX™ is powered by BioLife Complex™ which targets depleted and declining soils to revitalize the natural growth cycle. Beneficial microbes, trace elements, pH conditioners restore the natural balance in the soil. Apply it to the top of the soil and water-in to activate or mix it with the soil when replanting.
1 bag covers 50 square feet.
Use for revitalizing garden soils that have become unproductive over time.

Gypsum 40 lb. 15% Sulfur
Gypsum soil amendment improves drainage in soils high in exchangeable sodium. High sodium content in soils causes applied water to puddle and drain poorly. Gypsum mixed into the soil and irrigated increases the calcium content of soils and aids in removing sodium. Removal of sodium improves plant growth, plant health and soil drainage.
Soil and plant improvement:
Apply approximately 40 pounds of gypsum every 200 square feet and mix into the top 4 to 6 inches. Irrigate the soil to remove sodium. To determine the exact amount of gypsum needed for large areas requires a professional soil test.
- Adding calcium to soils
- Neutral pH
- Removing excess sodium from soils
- "Soften" soil made hard by the presence of sodium salts
Kelzyme “Rock Dust” Available by the pound or ton
Kelzyme is mined from ancient marine sediments in Northern Nevada. Kelzyme contains a myriad of trace minerals normally eroded during irrigations or cropping cycles. Kelzyme is OMRI approved for organic livestock feed and crop fertilizer/soil amendment. Mineral analysis conducted by Wallace Laboratories in El Segundo, California, is available upon request.
- Adding calcium and trace minerals to heavily cropped soils
- Adding dozens of soil minerals to soil that were lost from irrigation
- Renewing soils that were previously productive but yields are diminishing
Organic Magic 30 lb Approved for Organic Farming
Organic Magic is a soil additive that is water soluble and lowers soil pH or alkalinity very quickly. Use for acid loving plants such as blueberries, camelias, azaleas and others.
Perlite Available by the cubic foot
Perlite is a lightweight (30–150 kg/m3) natural product made by expanding volcanic minerals with heat. In soil mixes, perlite substitutes for sand in the mineral component of a soil mix to decrease final weight, improve drainage and prevent soils from compacting.
It is a primary component of lightweight soils. It is commonly used in plant propagation, container plants where weight is a concern, rooftop gardening and hydroponics. It can be used as a substitute for diatomaceous earth for filtering. Perlite is relatively inert, has a very low cation exchange capacity (CEC) and does not retain fertilizer in a soil mix, an important advantage under some growing conditions.
- Soil Mixes where weight is a concern
Soil Sulfur 4 and 20 lb.
Sulfur is a plant macronutrient: it is needed by plants in large amounts, particularly during development. Soil sulfur is applied to soils to reduce alkalinity (pH) and enhance plant uptake of minor elements such as iron, manganese and zinc. Soil sulfur can also be used in place of gypsum for removing sodium and improving drainage if soils have a high lime content. Apply it to warm, moist soils for faster reaction due to soil microorganisms and the lowering of soil pH.
The amount to apply depends on the soil but generally is from 2 to 5 pounds per hundred square feet.
- Supplying sulfur fertilizer to plants
- Lowering soil pH
- Removing excess sodium from soils
- Substitute for gypsum in calcareous soils
- "Soften" soils made hard by the presence of sodium salts
Sphagnum Peat Moss SOLD OUT
Sphagnum peat moss is a natural product and represents over a hundred different mosses and is harvested from peat bogs. Sphagnum peat moss is used in soil mixes to increase aeration, water retention, lower alkalinity (pH) and retain nutrients (increase cation exchange capacity). This can be particularly useful in sandy soils or soil mixes that contain perlite or alkaline soils.
Sphagnum peat moss is used on golf courses, floral arrangements, for hanging baskets liners, orchid production, potting mixes, mushroom cultivation, carnivorous plants such as Venus fly trap, sundews and pitcher plants. It is also used for filtration and fungicidal and bactericidal properties.
- Lowering soil pH
- Improving soil moisture holding
- Improving drainage in soil mixes
- Improving soil aeration
TurfMAX 37 lb bag
Premium Soil Amendment
Sometimes your lawn just isn’t growing like it should. TurfMAX™ Soil Treatment is a ‘Fix It’ solution for your lawn. Apply it to the top of freshly mowed grass or under new sod and water‐in to activate.
1 Bag covers 50 square feet
Use for revitalizing soils that have become slowly depleted over time.
Vermiculite Sold by the cubic foot
Vermiculite is a lightweight natural product made by expanding clay minerals (mica) with heat. In soil mixes vermiculite, like perlite, substitutes for sand in the mineral component of a soil to decrease its final weight, improve drainage and prevent soils from compacting. Unlike perlite, vermiculite has a relatively high cation exchange capacity (100 -150 meq/100 g) and can retain fertilizer in a soil mix.
- plant propagation
- seed germination
- storing bulbs, seed and root crops
- mushroom cultivation
- heat insulation
- waste treatment
