All Fertilizers

Please Read The Fertilizer Label

Fertilizers are needed by plants to keep their health in the prime, increase the food they produce, increase their size and speed at which they grow, increase flowering and flower quality and improve anchorage in soils.  Without additional fertilizers, and the right kind, most plants would struggle in desert soils and eventually die.

Fertilizers are graded for three plant nutrients; nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The amount of each is listed with three numbers separated by dashes. For example, 16-16-16, contains 16% nitrogen, phosphorus* and potassium* in that order.

Here is what these plant nutrients do for plants
  • Nitrogen - leaf and stem growth and improves plant color
  • Phosphorus - flower, fruit and seed production, root growth and oil production
  • Potassium - Improves tolerance to heat, drought and diseases

*Actual phosphorus content multiply by 0.436; for potassium multiply by 0.83

Is a Fertilizer Organic?

A common question is whether a fertilizer is "organic" or not. This is difficult to answer because "organic" means different things to different people; "Certified Organic" is a USDA designation for its National Organic Program while the popular definition of organic means "coming from plants or animals", not "manufactured".

On our website, "Certified Organic" means the product has been approved by OMRI. "Conventional fertilizers" are those mined from the ground or produced by fertilizer manufacturers.

All Purpose Fertilizer    16-16-16     20 lb       Granular conventional fertilizer

Arizona’s Best All Purpose Fertilizer can be used to fertilize a variety of landscape plants. It’s formulation is designed to encourage growth, flowering and fruiting, and the establishment of new plants.

Use for:

  • landscape trees and shrubs
  • newly established lawns
  • flower beds
  • vegetables and fruit trees

For lawns, vegetable and flower beds apply 3 to 4 pounds per thousand square feet every 4 to 6 weeks. Use ¼ to ½ cup for small to medium sized shrubs. For established trees and large shrubs, use 2 to 4 cups per plant.

Ammonium Phosphate  16-20-0   10&20 lb     Granular conventional fertilizer

Because of its high phosphorus content, ammonium phosphate is frequently used as a “starter fertilizer” for vegetable transplants, mixed in backfill when planting trees and shrubs and preparing the soil for lawns started with seed, stolons, plugs or seed. Ammonium phosphate is slightly acidic when irrigated, an advantage when applied to our alkaline soils. Ammonium phosphate contains 13% sulfur.

Use for:

  • soils for planting new trees, shrubs, lawns, fruit trees, vegetables
  • vegetable transplants

Apply 5 pounds of 16-20-0 for each 1000 ft.² and mixed into the soil prior to planting. Use ½ cup for each 5 gallons of container size and mixed into the backfill prior to planting. Incorporate 5 pounds of fertilizer for each 100 foot of row prior to planting.

Ammonium Sulfate  21-0-0    10 & 40 lb.    Granular conventional fertilizer

Ammonium sulfate is applied to boost growth in general. Ammonium sulfate is a general purpose nitrogen fertilizer for alkaline (high pH) soils. Ammonium sulfate lowers soil pH as it contributes nitrogen and sulfur for plant growth. Because it dissolves easily in water, it is added to sprays containing insecticides, weed killers, fungicides and micronutrients to enhance their activity. Avoid applications during hot weather because of its potential for burning plants. Place no closer than three inches from germinating seeds when banding or side dressing transplants or new seedlings. Ammonium sulfate contains 24% sulfur. It can be used in foliar fertilizers and fertilizer injectors. Use a surfactant such as EZ Wet when applying fertilizers as foliar sprays.

Use for:

  • pushing new growth faster, increasing plant size and darker green plant color
  • adding nitrogen to the soil

Apply 1 pound per 100 foot row or 3 to 5 pounds of fertilizer each 1000 ft.² Use approximately ½ tbs per 5 gallon container.

Blood Meal  12-0-0     3, 10 & 15 lb.    Organic fertilizer

Blood meal is an organic nitrogen fertilizer that contains 12% nitrogen. Since the nitrogen is in organic form, it is released slowly to plants giving them a gentle boost in growth and production. Blood meal is used in certified organic production of vegetables and fruit. Blood meal deters rabbits when there are alternative sources of food. Blood meal is used as a compost activator and supplies an organic form of nitrogen for compost microorganisms. Avoid over-application which can lead to plant burning due to the high ammonium content.

Use for:

  • pushing new growth and size of plants, darker green plant color
  • adding nitrogen to the soil
  • biologically active

Incorporate 5 lbs. per 100 square feet, 2 to 3 lbs. per 100 linear feet of row or 1 tbs. per 5 gallon container.

Bone Meal  1-15-0     4 & 15 lb.    Organic fertilizer

Bone meal is a slow-release, organic phosphorus fertilizer used in certified organic production. Most bone meal contains about 6 ½% phosphorus (15% P2O5). Phosphorus fertilizers are mixed into the soil before planting seed or transplants. Acidic soils release phosphorus more quickly than alkaline soils. Applications of soil sulfur, compost teas, peat moss and acid-forming fertilizers assist in the release of phosphorus to plants.

Use for:

  • improving root growth and plant establishment
  • encouraging flowering and fruiting
  • increase oil production
  • biologically active

Incorporate 10 to 15 lbs. per 100 square feet for new planting. Sidedress with 5 lbs. per 100 foot of row.

Cactus Juice 1-7-6   1 pint (16 oz.)     Liquid concentrated fertilizer

Cottonseed Meal     5-2-1    15 lb.    Organic fertilizer                                           SOLD OUT

Cottonseed meal is a slow release, complete fertilizer as well as a soil amendment which adds organic matter back to the soil. Cottonseed meal has an acidic reaction in the soil which helps reduce alkalinity. Cottonseed meal is the recycled residue from ginning cotton and has been used by organic growers successfully for decades. Cottonseed meal is an excellent choice for summer fertilizing roses, camellias, azaleas, vegetables and flower beds.

Use for;

  • organic vegetable production
  • organic fruit production
  • organic flower production
  • biologically active

Incorporate 10 to 15 lb. per 100 square feet. Sidedress vegetables with 5 lbs. per 100 foot row.

Calcium Nitrate    15.5-0-0      50 lb.    Conventional granular fertilizer

Calcium is a major nutrient for plants and can be a limiting plant nutrient in environments with heavy leaching or is calcium deficient. Calcium nitrate supplies both calcium and nitrogen to plants in a totally soluble form and is the only calcium fertilizer totally soluble in water. It is an important calcium fertilizer for plants growing in sand, hydroponic, fertilizer injectors and soil-less media. Calcium nitrate is popular in greenhouses, hydroponics and golf courses that maintain sand-based greens and tees. Calcium nitrate is used as a foliar fertilizer and foliar spray to reduce “bitter pit” in apple and “corky spot” in pear. Foliar sprays should include a surfactant such as EZ Wet.

Use for:

  • sandy soils
  • hydroponics
  • fertilizer injectors
  • calcium deficiencies

For lawns and bedding plants apply 12 to 16 pounds of fertilizer each 1000 square feet every two months. For trees and shrubs, use 1 lb every 100 ft.² under the plant canopy.

Disper-sul     50lb      Amendment to lower soil pH

Dispersul is a water soluble sulfur product containing 90% sulfur. Disper-sul supplies sulfur to the plant as a nutrient and also helps lower soil pH and alkalinity. Disper-sul prevents the problem of sulfur fertilizers of a slow reaction time because of the granular form of soil sulfurs.

For soils with a pH of 8.0 apply 30 lbs of Disper-sul for each 1000 square feet of surface area and mix with the existing soil. For soils higher than this pH, apply 48 lbs per 1000 square feet. Split applications are best with half applied in the spring and the other half in the early fall. Dispersul can be applied in split applications directly on top of a lawn. Make sure the lawn is dry at the time of application and water Disper-sul into the lawn after the application has been made. Mow any time after the first watering.

Use it as substitute for Greensand and Epsom salts. Sul-Po-Mg contains no calcium and does not affect soil pH. Magnesium deficiency causes yellowing of older leaves in palms and citrus particularly in sandy soils.

As a general application, apply 6 pounds of Sul-Po-Mag over 1000 ft.² and incorporate lightly into the soil. Mature trees may require as much as 1 to 2 pounds per tree, applied to the soil, followed by an irrigation.

Sulfur  98% sulfur   5 & 20 lb     Granular fertilizer and soil amendment

Sulfur is both a fertilizer and soil amendment. Sulfur is typically used in alkaline soils as a soil amendment to reduce alkalinity. Sulfur can be used in calcareous soils in place of gypsum to relieve compaction due to high sodium. Unlike gypsum, sulfur lowers soil pH which is an advantage and alkaline soils. Sulfur works best when applied to warm, wet soils. Granular sulfur provides an acidic reaction to soils that can last many months or even years.

In alkaline soils, 20-40 pounds of sulfur should be applied in 1000 ft², lightly mixed in the upper 2 to 3 inches and irrigated. The amount of sulfur to use varies with soil pH, type of soil and its calcium content.

A second application can be made to juvenile trees and shrubs, to encourage increased growth, 2 to 3 months after the first application. Avoid applications to winter-tender plants after August 1. Apply no closer than 12 inches to a plant’s trunk or main stem and irrigate. Place fertilizer 4 to 6 inches beneath the soil surface near the source of irrigation.

For shrubs, use 1 tablespoon for every foot in height. For trees, see Viragrow’s information sheet, How to Fertilize Trees and Shrubs.

Triple Super Phosphate 0-45-0    50lb/15lb       Pre-plant granular fertilizer

Granular, high phosphate fertilizer rapidly taken up by plants due to its high solubility. Contains no nitrogen and is acid-forming in soils, an advantage in alkaline soils. TSP encourages root development, flowering, fruiting, seed and nut production. This is the primary granular fertilizer used in blending granular fertilizers that contain phosphorus.
